Labyrinth (the aforementioned Thing)

A few months ago I decided I wanted to make a portable labyrinth. After planning, design, etc, it finally happened. (And in time for Baitcon, too, but the non-stop rain meant it could never be brought out. It finally debuted at treacle_well's birthday picnic and will also be out at ArtBeat.) Created by myself, Mark, scholargipsy, magid, and queue, I think it turned out very nicely and we're all rather proud. :)

Queue took some pictures which were finally uploaded last night.

Thanks. I was really looking forward to having it out at Baitcon, though I suppose even in perfect weather, space options were limited. I think I forgot that the big open space deeper in the woods was at the OSP. However, there will be next year. :)

now I'm pondering what would be the best paint to use on a tarp to achieve the same result...

Some folks have been doing a Candle Labyrinth the past few years at Rites of Spring -- it's amazing. Simply, a bunch of luminaria (tea-lights set in paper bags or plastic cups which have an inch or so of sand in the bottom work very well), set in the familiar pattern...

The folks who've been doing the one at Rites spend an hour or two doing the setup, then several hours maintaining -- replacing burnt-out tea lights -- and chanting, while anyone who wants to walks it...

Talk about altering!

Do you mean what is a labyrinth or how did we make it? I actually did mean to give more detail, but was so excited about finally having the pictures that I just wanted to get them up. I'll probably post again. :]

It is thirty by thirty feet. I would have done one on the ground if I had the space to do so, though. The sensation of the ground beneath one's feet is, imho, far nicer than an alternative and adds to the whole experience.

We're not exactly sure yet, but since it's portable, figure we can play it by ear that morning. I'll be on-site for setup early in any event. I'm guessing it will be down toward the end of Elm, Highland, or Holland, so as to be away from the center of activity. If this is something you'd like to be involved in, let me know.

I was kind of assuming that the bottom would end up pretty worn and dirty from facing pavement, dirt, wet ground, etc, but I suppose if use shows the bottom to be in consistently good condition, it could be considered.

i'm adding you as a friend, i'm interested in labyrinths too, i usually do chalk ones, and just did my first paint on hardwood. i'll dig up some pictures and post them soon, if you friend me back you can see them, i hope. :)

Actually, I would prefer to volunteer for an hour or two at the Art Cafe, if you or someone else is doing it again this year. If not, then yeah, maybe I can do something for the labyrinth.

I am doing it again, on request. I'm a little sad to not be able to implement a new idea (because I did have some), but also happy that my idea from last year worked out well enough that they asked for a repeat. Messages will be going out later today soliciting volunteers: keep your eyes open. :)
