File the police report if you haven't already. When mine was stolen, I called them minutes after the theft. Police found it 20 minutes later, leaning against a dumpster behind the North Street public housing buildings. Youths standing nearby claimed to know nothing about it, of course.
OTOH, I witnessed a guy with bolt cutters in the process of stealing a bike in Copley Sq. one sunny afternoon. I ran over to a cop less than 100 feet away, and pointed out what was going on. He was not interested--seems he was just finishing duty at a construction site nearby. Couldn't even be bothered to call it in on his radio. Shrugged his shoulders. WTF.
The thief expertly cut through the cable and rode off with the bike in under three minutes. Left behind the cut cable and helmut that was on it. Obviously not a bike owner who lost his key.
