When I was in high school, SEVENTEEN magazine, I think it was, had an article about making New Year's resolutions in the fall, when school is starting. Of course I'm no longer in school, but a number of factors contribute to make me think of this season as the beginning of the new year. For one thing, it was, for all of those years when I *was* in school. And it's the season of my birthday (next Sunday). And after the languor of summer, the invigorating fall weather, as well as many organizations' ccalendars, call us to new projects and goals.
So in my humble and irrelevant opinion, Rosh Hashana is timed perfectly!
