=o= From the New York Times, ten years ago, a trans classical pianist with a 25-year successful career came out and found herself unable to get work. Watch the video, too.

=o= For the font geeks, an interesting and informative analysis of the fonts/typefaces used in Mad Men. Even *I* noticed the problematic church flyer, but that was fairly fleeting. :)

=o= One of the greatest players in baseball, Ichiro Suzuki is damn sexy and has quite a way with words, "Chicks who dig home runs aren't the ones who appeal to me. I think there's sexiness in infield hits because they require technique. I'd rather impress the chicks with my technique than with my brute strength.> Then, every now and then, just to show I can do that, too, I might flirt a little by hitting one out." He could certainly get to first base with *me*.

=o= Coinstar is doing a promo where if you redeem $40 for a gift card, you'll get another $10 gift card free. Even if you don't have change at home, it could be worth going to the bank to get a few rolls of quarters to take advantage of this.

=o= It's hard to imagine a more heated debate than the question of which shaker is for salt and which for pepper. But can anyone really argue with the words of the The International Guild of Professional Butlers (cited in the second comment)?

Unfortunately, the linked site seems to be gone, but they have a newer, fancier one!

The shaker debate has a simple solution: salt goes in a shaker, pepper goes in a grinder. Pre-ground pepper has no flavor. I've always wanted one of those restaurant pepper grinders the size of a baseball bat, but really I don't go through enough pepper to make it worthwhile.

Very true.

Me, I just have a butler follow me around everywhere I go with a grinder to ask whether I'd like fresh ground pepper on that.

I was just about to say this.

I've seen salt mills as well, and I've been tempted to try one to see if ground salt is saltier, but since I don't actually use much salt, I haven't gotten around to actually bothering.

Yeah. I have a grinder that's only about a foot tall, which still holds an inordinate amount of pepper :)

The discussion on varying "standards" for shakers is awfully confusing.

I have about $100 in change, and we're planning to pay for our whole Thanksgiving dinner with it. I wonder if I could change $40 in coins two times, and then get two $10 bonus cards, effectively turning $100 into $120...

It's one bonus per household, so if you each redeemed one, you could do it twice. But remember that this only works if you get a gift card/cert, though. If you wanted to get cash money, you wouldn't get the bonus and you'd also need to pay their 8.9% (or whatever it is) fee.

If the gift cards are good for a while, I'd totally do that over getting cash money. It would be impossible for us to spend the whole $120 on one Thanksgiving dinner for a small group (unless we shopped stupidly), so we can save whatever is left on the cards for future shopping trips.

The cards aren't good just anywhere, though -- most significantly, you can't use them at the supermarket (for that you need to get cash/moneycard and pay the fee, so they make a lot of money by having these in supermarkets).

These are the places for which you can get the GCs. I'll probably go with Amazon because they sell everything. :)
