I don't even have a TV*, but the advertising and word-of-mouth is sufficiently pervasive that I still know it's Shark Week on Discovery, so there was no way I could lose the opportunity to post with this userpic.

And as long as I'm at it, here's a few excellent links:

[* ETA: Just to be clear, since too many people I know believe it somehow elevates them, the fact that I don't have a TV in no way makes me better than you. It's just a random factoid that had relevance there. The things that make me better than you are of far greater substance.]

The Somerville Theatre is showing the original Jaws later this month. Want to go? (You needn't have a 'Gansett if you don't want one)

I do not believe in watching shark things until after beach season is firmly over.

Seriously, I kept that open forever because it makes me smile every time.

And you're quite welcome. You totally rock. At some point I will need to get a Duck Attack! shirt, but only in a girly cut.

I'm kind of amused at how Shark Week has become a pop culture event. We're deeply fascinated with the toothy bastards.

I didn't realize you had lost or given away or sold your TV, as I recall watching either election returns or the Red Sox at your place within the last couple years.

(I bet if you think back you'll recall exactly where her television has ended up for the time being, cause if I remember correctly, you helped relocate it)

I know what you mean! I rarely if ever watch TV, like basically *never* and I never know what anybody's talking about -- but it's not because I think this makes me superior and I feel a little embarrassed whenever I mention it. There was a time when I watched significantly more TV. There used to be shows I loved a lot, and there are shows I'm missing now I'd probably really enjoy. I didn't cut it out of my life to be more virtuous. I just stopped having time. Someday I might watch more again.

Is this something I'd need a television to understand?

+1 on not watching TV. And really, the way to see sharks is to don a mask, and jump in the water with them. After that, you'll spend the rest of your days wondering how on earth people can vilify, and even eat, these graceful, majestic creatures.

Comment the Second...
As long as people are willing to spend an amount of money equal to the national debt on their weddings, I say "the White Mountains are a *fine* backdrop for your nuptials. Live Free or Die, baby!" To those states who haven't figured this out, I'm OK with their citizens opening their wallets to my local economy. Go ahead and ban the license to print money in your state, and let me know how that works out for you.
Gay marriage bans are going to be a problem only as long as people fail to recognize that the wedding-industrial complex is a huge economic engine. Trying to make rational arguments ("Straight couples divorce, beat each other, neglect their children, and do all the "monster" things you say gay people do") never convinced anyone of anything. If you show someone that "there's gold in them thar hills!", you've won their hearts and minds in less time than it takes to say "I do".
