When DD played his sweet video at Pi-Con (at the Arisia party we were hosting, no less, as if it wasn't already geeky enough), at some point I smooched him and said,

"Also, I love the extra bonus stealth geekiness in the musical choice!"

He smiled (adorably), "I was hoping you'd notice that."

"Of COURSE I noticed! How could I NOT notice?" *more smooches*

It seemed, however, that nobody else who saw the video noticed. So is it just us? I don't think so.

Time for a musical quiz! In order to let folks hear it without revealing any further information, I turned it into black-screen YouTube video, embedded behind the cut, because it's so f'in annoying when people embed videos and don't cut them. If you don't like cuts or embeds, you can just follow this link. If you don't like YouTube, you're on your own. (FYI, DD's video was only 1:40, but the entire song is in there for your pleasure.)

Okay. That's funny.

But most people don't actually listen to lyrics. I was falling out of my seat laughing during "For The Boys" when Bette Midler was rewriting song lyrics on the fly to insult her partner and everyone in the theater was looking at me like I was insane because no one else was actually listening to what she was singing!

Um, okay.. so...

I'm not sure I have any idea what you're talking about! :]

(But I do get what you're saying in general, although I'd expand to say that many people don't really notice the music at all. One of my favorite bits of Family Guy's Blue Harvest was the Muzak version of the Imperial March playing in the elevator, which had me falling out of my chair to the confusion of my fellow viewers. Then we had to rewind so they could listen.)

music accompaniment is meant--in general--to add mood. so if you are paying too much attention to it, you are likely missing something else. Though, probably not in reality i just like excuses :)

I don't think noticing something implies paying too much attention to it. :)

(I notice the opposite effect as well -- if the musical choice is terrible, it really takes away from the experience for me.)

oh definitely. i prefer no music at all in general (unless it's part of the actual scene, like at a club) - i think if the scene isn't holding up then the problem isn't a lack of extra sounds.

also, i know what the song is from, and googled to confirm, but i am kinda scratching my head as to why this is significant *am dumb*

There is a scene in the movie For The Boys where one of the singer rewrites the lyrics to a duet "on the fly" to insult the person she's singing with. It's hysterically funny and integral enough to the scene that people should be paying attention to what is being sung... only most people think "Oh! Someone is singing" and stop listening at that level.

Oh, it was the "subtleties in the lyrics pointing out bits about the relationship" and the difference between hearing that someone is singing and WHAT someone is singing.

Except in this case, the song lyrics aren't actually relevant to the poll question.

I started listening to the song and found that it was hard to make out many of the words.

The lyrics aren't particularly relevant, but they're clearly decipherable enough for people to use the powers of the Internet. :)

(OTOH, there are a lot more "views" than poll respondents, so I don't know what all those other folks are thinking.)

It sounded familiar, but I couldn't quite place it. Google helped me figure it out, though.

These days, that style of music makes me think of Fallout 3, but once I saw the result of a Google search, I slapped myself for not getting it sooner.

I have never actually been exposed to the context that would have made it make sense, but through the Power of the Internet I at least get the joke. :)

Crap. I meant to hit option two, not three.
Initially, I thought "Brazil", but Google straightened that out.

Oh, so it's just to do with what it's from? I didn't recall immediately but had some vague thought, and had to Google to confirm after I'd checked "off clueless." And yeah, I could change my answer, but I won't.

It didn't occur to me to use the power of the internet on the song lyrics.

On the otherhand, Smiles liked dancing to it, so maybe I will listen to it again...

my first reaction was...

"I hope she lives longer than 5 years" and also that you'd look amazing in that wrap she wears.

I'm not sure how to "get it" without the video. Are we just "getting" that the song has geek associations? I seem to remember the song coming at the end of one or another old dystopian SF/F flicks, but don't remember the particulars. Strikes me as the sort of thing you'd have to either have seen recently, have seen frequently, or have a special connection to. I do register incidental music (particularly songs with lyrics, which are usually chosen for special effect, but also the parts that I can tell are intended to indicate or recall something), but I don't *usually* remember it for years afterward.

However, it would be strange if people didn't register background music on a home video and wonder why it was chosen. It's possible people have more than one association for the song, though.

I immediately recognized the song as something I should know, from a movie I should know, but failed to place it until googling the opening words ... and I knew I have that album and that song on my computer, and I do, but I guessed a wrong movie and got stuck there. Yeah, is cute. :-) Geeks in love!
