As a big fan of the source material, I can't really say for sure, but I'd lean towards it being better if you've read it.

I'm about 2/3 through the book, which is the main reason I didn't go to that midnight show. That, and wanting to be functional the next day.

I only got through about 1/3 of the book (it was giving me nightmares), and thought they'd done an incredible job staying true to the story and the feel of the original and didn't feel slighted or lost at not having finished reading it.
